Why Janky Robots?
We like what Reddit co-founder and entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian has to say about this: “The first version of everything is janky. Don’t fear jankiness as long as you’re solving a problem.” Our programs help the inventors and problem solvers of tomorrow understand that jankiness is a good thing because it means their ideas are becoming real.
Who came up with the idea for Janky Robots?
That would be me! My name is Will Sanford, and I love helping people get started with robotics and creative tech making. I’ve been a middle school robotics coach for 10 years and a tinkerer and DIYer for as long as I can remember.

What are the requirements for hosting a Tater Bots session?
Tater Bots can go almost anywhere. Participants need space to spread out and work, either at tables or on the floor. And there needs to be an open area approximately 10 ft by 10 ft for the challenges. Access to a standard electrical outlet can be useful but is not required. Outdoor spaces are even a possibility as long as there’s some protection from the elements (e.g., a covered porch or picnic shelter). We’ll make sure the space you have in mind will work before confirming your booking.
Are Tater Bots actually powered by potatoes?
We get asked this question a lot! The video below shows how to turn a potato into a battery–a classic science fair project.
In the video, it takes two potatoes to make an LED bulb light up (faintly). To power the electronics we use for a Janky Robot plus a couple of motors, we’d need a lot more than two potatoes. In fact, we’d need hundreds of potatoes to get the required voltage and current (amps). What would that look like? Like this. I think we’ll stick with the built-in lithium ion battery on the Wukong breakout board. Much easier and more reliable (and rechargeable)!
Does my child get to take their robot(s) home?
Typically the cost of our workshops, school-based clubs, and camps includes only the robot-building experience. Depending upon availability, the electronics, motors, and other components used may be available for purchase at the conclusion of the experience. We will also provide a parts list for those who wish to source everything themselves.
